Bobcat Summer Reading Program
Incoming 5th Graders
Dear Incoming Fifth Grade Parents:
Our summer reading program continues
this year. All students from
Preschool through Grade 8 will be
participating. This program
will provide them with valuable
opportunities to engage in
productive, academic activities over
the long summer months.
Research has shown that students who
do not read over the summer can lose
one to three months of progress in
reading. Students who do read
over the summer and have involved
parental support with reading can
actually gain achievement in
reading. Reading is a powerful way to keep
young minds engaged, particularly
over the long summer, and that by
reading books recommended here
students will continue to be
thinking, imagining and learning new
skills important to their future
success. It is a positive and
productive activity to be added to
all the others students engage in
throughout the summer.
Students entering Fifth Grade will
be required to read
4
books…2 of which
are required and are listed below,
and 2 of their own choice. Of
course, we encourage the students to
read beyond the required 4 books and
we have attached a list of suggested
titles or they may make their own
selection. Please make sure
that if the title is of their own
selection, that it is book level and
age appropriate.
Fifth Grade Assigned Titles:
-
A View From Saturday by E.L.
Konisburg
-
The Word Eater by Mary Amato

Please use the
Parental Verification Form
to record the books your child reads
over the summer. Additional
copies of these forms can be made,
if necessary. When the children
return to school in August, they
must give their completed Parental
Verification form to their classroom
teacher. The first week of school
the students will be assessed on
their knowledge of the 2 required
books. This assessment will be worth
1 English grade. This is a wonderful
opportunity for the students to
start the school year off on the
right foot!
There is no substitute for reading
books carefully and to completion.
With your help, we can begin your
child’s fifth grade school
experience with a positive academic
activity that will prepare them for
the new challenges they’ll face,
give them plenty of opportunity to
begin their school year with solid
grades, and provide them with
another fun activity to keep them
occupied over the summer months to
come.
Most of all encourage your child to
read and make reading part of an
enjoyable summer routine. No other
single activity will produce greater
benefits for your child. May you and
your child have a safe, fun, and
book-filled summer!
Happy
Reading!
